Basic rules for building business relationships

Basic rules for building business relationships

These are some simple principles to work with when building and maintaining business relationships.

They apply, in particular, to relationships with people in the Pacific Islands but they are really a template for all relationship building.

1. Relationships First, Business Second

  • In the Pacific, people value trust and personal connections over quick deals. Spend time getting to know them—meet face-to-face, share a meal, and show genuine interest.

2. Respect the Culture

  • Every island has its own customs, so do your homework. Show respect by learning a few local phrases or understanding their traditions. It goes a long way.

3. Patience is Key

  • Things might move slower than you’re used to. Don’t rush—decisions often take time, and it’s all about building trust.

4. Support Local Communities

  • Pacific Islanders love businesses that give back. Hire locals, source local materials, or support community projects—it’ll win you goodwill.

5. Be Clear and Straightforward

  • Keep your communication simple and clear. Avoid jargon and get to the point, but always in a respectful way.

6. Use Word of Mouth

  • Word spreads fast in close-knit communities. Deliver on your promises, and locals will promote your business for you.

7. Go Green

  • Pacific Islanders care about their environment. Highlight any eco-friendly aspects of your business—it’ll earn you major points.

8. Understand Logistics

  • Shipping can be tricky and expensive in the Pacific. Plan carefully and be upfront about delivery times and costs.

9. Network at Local Events

  • Festivals and community gatherings are great places to meet potential partners or customers. Be friendly, and don’t forget to bring small gifts—it’s a sign of respect.

10. Be Flexible

  • Things don’t always go as planned, whether it’s a weather delay or a change in local rules. Stay adaptable and open-minded.
